Chapter Fifteen
Sunlight washed in on Mitch, pulling him out of the deepest slumber he could remember. He reached across the bed for Emily, as he had twice during the night, but found the mattress empty. Confused, he scrubbed at his eyes and lifted to one elbow.
A quick scan around the room revealed her on the balcony. She wore the hotel’s fluffy white robe and stared out over the railing, a far-away expression on her face. The early morning light gave her an ethereal beauty that stole the wind right out of his lungs.
He was done for. Toast. Scrambled. Put a fork in him—whatever. In that moment he knew he’d lost his heart to Emily. It probably hadn’t been much of a fall; she’d had a piece of it for as long as he could remember. But he sensed in the depth of his soul he would never again experience the intense, somewhat frightening way his chest cramped inward as he looked at a woman. Not like it did now.
“Fuck,” he muttered beneath his breath. He didn’t need this. Not someone his polar opposite. Not someone who was only hanging around for a few days.
Definitely not his best friend’s little sister.
He’d figure out a plan. Right this minute he hungered for said little sister’s kiss.
He threw the covers off, swung his legs out of bed, and pulled on his boxers. Stretching, he yawned. His body felt abused…in a good kind of way. The lingering burn in muscles that weren’t used to such rigorous activity was oddly satisfying. Her cries of pleasure would stay with him. He rolled a shoulder and chuckled. As well as the scrapes on his back.
He glanced in the mirror and chuckled again. She’d really done a number on his back that last time.
Mitch slid open the balcony door and stepped out into the cool morning. “You okay?”
She startled, then turned to him with a faint smile. “Just thinking.”
“About?” Leaning a hip on the railing, he pushed a lock of her long hair over her shoulder.
“Yesterday with Dad…” Shaking her head, she turned back to looking down at the streets. “It was a little too much, you know? I think it’s best if I go home.”
His throat turned to chalk in one heavy heartbeat. Go home? “Like when?” he asked, hoping it sounded casual. She couldn’t leave. Not now. Not when…he wasn’t ready for her to go. He was supposed to have more time. More nights like this. More sweet kisses to lull him to sleep.
Jesus, what’s wrong with me? He didn’t want a woman to have this kind of power over him, to be able to break him on her whim.
She lifted a hesitant gaze to his, as if she suspected her answer might affect him. “Like tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?” he echoed, his stomach balling into a knot.
“I don’t want to deal with the pomp and circumstance of his ceremony tomorrow—that whole thing just disgusts me. Honor someone who put everyone but his family first.” She scoffed and looked away.
